Commissioned by Thomas E.B. Pegues, a wealthy landowner, Ammadelle was inspired by Vaux’s design for Tuscan villas, adapted for Mississippi’s climate with wide verandas and deep porches. Construction paused during the Civil War, leaving some features—like balconies and a wine cellar—unfinished. Local lore says Confederate soldiers hid in a secret room, and Union troops attempted to burn the house before retreating; surviving charred floorboards remained intact.
Architecture & Preservation
The mansion features red brick walls, white Italianate trim, tall arched windows, and black shutters. Its seven-acre grounds—also designed by Vaux—have retained the original landscape layout. Later owners changed its name from “Edgecomb” to “Ammadelle,” combining the names “Amma” and “Delle” in 1898. The Tatum family restored the mansion in the 1960s, protecting its architecture with historic easements.
